One of the cool things we do here is cleaning. Why is it cool? It is one of the things we do that we see almost instantaneous results. We begin by taking the instrument apart then putting all the metal peices in a big chemical bath. It soaks in there for 15 minutes while the chemicals eat the gross stuff that grows inside horns.
| We take apart the valves so they can soak in the chemicals |
| The valve caps before the chemical soak |
| After the chemical soak, and a little bit of elbow grease to finish it off |
Then we do the fun stuff. We take soap and brushes and clean out all the gross stuff that could possibly be left in the horn. It is not a very pretty job. Some instruments are VERY dirty and we flush out all sorts of brown gunk. Just think - your MOUTH was on that thing! EWWWW!!
| The chemicals we use are green.. The black stuff is NOT normal. The darker the chemical when we flush it out, the dirtier it was! This was one dirty baritone! |
| Brushing out the tuning slides |
Is the Chem Clean worth it? Starting at $75.00, it pulls all the disgusting stuff out of horns, plus we take the time to get out any small dings, and make sure all the valves and slides are working the way they are supposed to do, then oil the valves and grease the slides. By the time we are done, it is just like new from the store. So yes, it is definitely worth it!!
We have compared the chem clean to a lot of different things - buying a car and never changing your oil, or never getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist. Just like you take care of your other more costly investments, your instrument is a big investment that needs to be taken care of.
Bring your horn in and let us see how we can help you!
